I have 5 servers (2 physical and 3 VMware, all running Server 2012 R2 Standard) and have been getting random backup fails on all 5 starting on January 25, 2017. All the fails will generate a Event ID 8229, 'The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events'. Prior this date, almost never had fails for almost 2 years.
The day before the fails, Sophos updated the endpoint to version 1.4.0. I have engaged Unitrends, Microsoft and Sophos with zero success, except if I totally uninstall the endpoint agent, then the problem is resolved.
Disabling Sophos does not resolve it. I have an encyclopedia of details on this issue, but just hoping to hear if someone else has encountered and can share some tips. Hi Jeff, Following this thread as we have been dealing with the exact same issue you are seeing with failed backups - on Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2. We cut over from Sophos on premises to cloud 1.4.1 at the end of April. We now are seeing random backup failures with VSS freeze/thaw events, and VSS writers showing in failed state. We have tested turning off on access scanning, HIPS (behavior monitoring), and setting the Unitrends WBPS.exe as excluded process from sophos scanning. And just like you state above - the backup may or may not fail.
If I completely remove Sophos from the servers in question, my test backups run fine. I have engaged, and opened a case with unitrends - but they are leaning towards Sophos as causing the failures. Interested in any feedback you receive on this issue. Thanks Eric K.
Hey Eric, Sorry to hear you have the same issue, but I'm relieved that I'm not the only one. The reality is that Unitrends did in fact make changes to their software around the first of the year. Essentially it will halt the backup immediately if there is any inconsistency in the shadow copy.
There were attempts made to roll back our Unitrends agents but the appliance itself could not be rolled back so the results were inconclusive. On one of your affected servers, at an elevated command prompt, run the command fltmc instances. According to Microsoft tech support, the SAVOnAccess driver has a handle on the shadow copies and is the source of the failure. Now, in addition to that, we have hmpalert driver loaded as well, which is the new Intercept X CryptoGuard offering from Sophos that has been applied to our server policy even though we didn't buy Intercept X. I am curious if you also have the hmpalert driver loaded?? No one at Sophos can explain why this service has been applied to servers. We also have device control (or peripheral control, it's the same thing but shows up differently on the client and Central Admin?) installed, which we never ordered.
As far as I know this is part of the Advanced protection suite. Again, I would be curious if you see these features and whether you pay for them or not? Robert, meeting with the Sophos regional pre-sales engineer today. I have had a support case open with Sophos for over 2 months. Early on in the case, I could not even get them to respond without me sending multiple emails. Then days or even weeks would go by without a response.
The case was finally escalated and the current tech is in contact daily, and making a good effort. But to this day, I have not received one single phone call from Sophos. Jeff Edited May 11, 2017 at 13:34 UTC. Hi Jeff, Yes we did run the fltmc instances early on in troubleshooting, and yes we did notice SAVOnAccess driver has teeth in the shadow copies.
We also have the hmpalert driver loaded as well (we have purchased intercept x as well as cryptogaurd - however we have yet to roll it out). The unitrends tech actually pointed to that as part of his troubleshooting process. I have even gone as far as setting the shadow copies as excluded from Sophos scans (which is bad practice) - still no luck. I'm going to get a ticket going with Sophos today as well. Just as an fyi - we have a unitrends 823S appliance with appliance and agent version 9.2.0-2.25.CentOS6 Interested in hearing how it goes for you. @Katie Incremental backups, every hour- Windows Server 2012 R2, Unitrends Agent v9 @JL27 - There are two servers, both with Sophos & Intercept X installed, but only one is failing backups.
Let's call the working one Server1 and the failing one Server2. Failures started the day we installed Sophos on Server2(Apr 17th). Failures happen at least once a day, sometimes two or three times. When I uninstalled it, the issue went away. Then I let Server2 run without Sophos for 3 straight days and did not encounter any errors. Then I re-installed and immediately suffered the same. I've tried disabling policies, or just having the base policy on Server2, or disabling real-time protection, none of this resolved the issue.
I posted this issue to reddit/r/sophos and received this response 'sophossocialsupportSOPHOS Employee 1 point 1 day ago Hi, I think that is how Sophos Intercept X works, it takes backup of the files when required and uses VSS backup process (shadow backup process). Thanks sg' - souce: This is exactly what I thought the cause was all along. Intercept X is utilizing VSS while backups are being taken.
This in turn puts the VSS Writers in a failed state because two sources are attempting to access it. What I'm thinking is that Intercept X uses VSS first. While it is using it, the Unitrends job starts, it goes to use the service but finds that it is in a locked state, which results in the backup failing and the VSS services in a failed state.
If we could have the ability to control the behavior of scans of Intercept X, it would probably prevent this from happening. Also a side note, when I had Unitrends Agent version 8, the backup status would just be a warning and Unitrends would retry the job and succeed.
Ever since we updated to Agent v9 it is failing and leaving the VSS writers in a failed state.

General Sysadmin topics and rants. Support stories from the trenches. I have installed (and now re-installed) Sophos Home on my iMac Desktop - UNDER WIN7 using Bootcamp. So I am talking about the Windows side. It installs just fine, but is completely unable to find the updated packages so it can install updates. I have a valid Sophos ID and can log into the Sophos website. The website can see my desktop and reports its okay.
However the alc.log shows: ERROR: Could not find a source for updated packages ERROR: Download of Sophos Endpoint Security and Control failed from server sophos. Any suggestions? Okay then its probably trivial to fix once I figure out where I am supposed to specify it in the software and then let the website know what its set to. I will look for that. Edit: I go on the website, log in, and check for a spot to indicate the username and password that is configured in my copy of Sophos Home and I don't see anything that lets me do that.

Error Message Can't Find Sophos Password
Under My Account-Endpoint and Server Protection it shows my name but no product or license credentials. I never had any of this complexity in setting up the free anti-virus on the Mac side of my box, why is this proving to be so complex? I presume somewhere in my account on the website I have to specify a username and password for AV updates, but I can't see where that is supposed to be.
I entered settings in the AV software itself that obviously do not work, so presumably I need to let you folks know what I entered, or enter some combination I get from you to authenticate any AV updates. Thanks for the help, this is bewilderingly complicated. Also, why is Sophos Home called Sophos Endpoint and Server Protection when you are done installing it? This also seems confusing.
I just wanted free AV protection and I like and trust Sophos - mostly because I used to work with a guy who worked there I admit:P.
Case # 00516615 Veeam version 7.0.0.771 I wonder if anyone could help me with this error that i recieve when trying to backup a Sophos UTM Appliance. Things ive checked done so far. Checked the forums and support site for fixes. Rebooted everything, Vm, ESX host, Veeam backup server. DNS = is good no issues here am able to resolve the appliance name Firewall = Ports are open from the backup server to the Vm and the other way around. Storage = no issues here am able to conntect to the data store and download the.vmx file to my desktop.
Ping = can ping between vm and Veeam backup server both directions. There are no losses when pinging the servers. I have seen the backup running sometimes it reaches 40% complete and then i recieve the following error:- 13-2-2014 9:40:35:: Processing SERVERNAME Error: Client error: VDDK error: 2057.NBDERRNETWORKCONNECT Exception from server: VDDK error: 2057.NBDERRNETWORKCONNECT Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: 2692. Failed to perform data backup. Other times the backup failes without starting with the following message.
SERVERNAME Error: Client error: Cannot get service content. TimeoutDetail: 'connect failed in tcpconnect', endpoint: ' address:443/sdk' SOAP connection is not available. Connection ID: IP ADDRESS. Failed to create NFC download stream. NFC path: nfc://conn:IP ADDRESS,nfchost:host-50,stg:datastore-30@SERVERNAME/SERVERNAME.vmx. Many thanks in advance.
Kind regards Sonic. Hi, I have had a Phone conversation with the support engineer today. We looked at quiet a few things 1) config of veeam 2) Proxy config ( no hotadd option at the moment) 3) connection between host and veeam sever 4) jumbo frames off on network adapter. 5) added 1 host as a stand alone host within Veeam ( still didnt work) 6) migrated the guest vm to a different data store. 7) from server a we were able to download the VMWare log, from the UTM we were unable to download the log file, even though both servers reside on the same datastore. The engineer was very helpful and knowledgable however this issue looks like a new issue.
'normally we dont see an error message that long '2057.NBDERRNETWORKCONNECT' so perhaps its a new issue idk. However we are not giving up on this one ive mailed my results to the engineer and will see whats next.
I begining to think ( but am not sure) that there may be an issue on the underlying storage, is it possible that the folder on the Lun for server A has different rights to the folder for server B. ( just clutching at straws now:lol) Ill have a look at the underlying storage to see if i can find anything, Kind regards Sonic.
Well i created a clone of the server. Which should then create a new VMDK file. After doing this i created a new backup job and ran it today. Unfortunatly i recieve the same issue, the server gets to about 40% and then failes with the error Error: Client error: VDDK error: 2057.NBDERRNETWORKCONNECT Exception from server: VDDK error: 2057.NBDERRNETWORKCONNECT Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: 3598. Failed to perform data backup. I have updated my case with the support guys and thought i would post my findings upto now here.
Red case for western digital my passport for mac. Kind regards sonic.
